“Everybody's got to believe in something. I believe I'll have another beer.”

~W.C. Fields

It was a good mail day!  I was sent spiced rum to try out!  Better still, small batch spiced rum that is made right here in Canada.  Testing, tasting and cocktail making began.....

WHY IS IT CALLED CHIC CHOC SPICED RUM?
That is what I was asking myself when I first got hold of the bottle!  Well, it’s made with six indigenous plants that grow in Quebec’s Chic Choc mountains on the Gaspé peninsula. They include Peppery Green Alder, Pine Forest Spikenard, Witherod Berries, Lovage Root, Wild Angelica and Sweet Gale (also called Bog Myrtle).  Chic Choc Spiced Rum is the latest creation from the award winning Domaine Pinnacle company that also created Ungava Premium Dry Gin (which, I will also be reviewing soon, just need to work on perfecting my cocktail recipe.  It's hard work but I will keep working on doing it for the team!)

OFFICIAL TASTING NOTES;
Bright deep amber colour; enticing aromas include notes of cinnamon, vanilla, ginger, angelica root, pepper and dried fruits; on the palate it is full bodied and warm, with a rich and round texture and flavours of sweet and savoury Nordic spices.

LIFE WITHOUT LEMONS TASTING TEAM NOTES:
Instantly warm and rich in your mouth with smooth, deep flavours and a subtle spice.  Not sickly sweet or overpowering (like some spiced rums I have tried).  Would work perfectly in long drinks with the addition of fruit or simply over ice with a fat wedge of lime.
The drink I created for my Chic Choc Spiced Rum is a simple, less sweet, citrus sharp version of a prohibition drink with a cool back story!  The Hurricane;

WHY IS IT CALLED A HURRICANE?
The hurricane is a sweet alcoholic drink made with rum, fruit juice, and syrup or grenadine. It is one of many popular drinks served in New Orleans.
The creation of this drink is credited to New Orleans tavern owner Pat O'Brien. The bar allegedly started as a speakeasy called Mr. O'Brien's Club Tipperary and the password was "storm's brewin'".
In the 1940s, he needed to create a new drink to help him get rid of all of the less-popular rum that local distributors forced him to buy before he could get a few cases of more popular liquors such as scotch. He poured the concoction into hurricane lamp–shaped glasses and gave it away to sailors.
The drink caught on, and it has been a mainstay in the French Quarter ever since. It is more commonly served in a disposable plastic cup, as New Orleans laws permit drinking in public and leaving a bar with a drink, but the city prohibits public drinking from glass containers.

This drink was inspired by my day at the last outside City Farmers Market of this years season.  The wind destroyed tents and blew away products creating havoc for us poor vendors!  After hanging onto my tent for dear life as the wind whistled around my ears I needed a warming cocktail to bring me back to reality.  Not quite a hurricane, but as close as I ever want to get to one;

I was sent a bottle of Chic Choc Spiced Rum to test for the blog.  Recipe, photographs and terrible use of grammar as always, my very own.  To also be clear the Life Without Lemon's Testing Team mainly just consists of me!  Opinions about the things I test are always honest, pinkie promise!
