FIVE MINUTES ALONE
Friday, June 22, 2012I recently watched Date Night on Netflix. I laughed a lot. There was one line by Tina Fey that really struck a chord with me. Her husband (Steve Carell) asked if she ever fantasises about being with someone else. She replies that no, she fantasises about being alone in a hotel room with a takeaway and a diet sprite- emphasis on alone! I think it's a Mum thing, well it is for me.
I am a tolerant, patient and relaxed parent most of the time but there are times when I just come to the end of my string and I can't focus on being calm and relaxed, I annoy myself so everyone else stands little chance. All I need is a little re-charge. This can be a drive in the car with music blasting out (this bugs my hubby so much, he hates my music, he hates it loud and he hates that I leave the radio on full blast when I switch the car off so it blasts out after a few seconds when restarted- he he!), it can be grabbing a coffee and sitting down to read, quietly or more often than not it's just to escape the house, the kids and the hubby. I love all of them dearly but I just have a need to escape them all for a while.
I can best explain it by how you fix your computer. You have a problem with your computer, you consult the help or phone the tech people:
"Start by switching it off and then wait and switch it back on again".
This is what I need at times- switch off and then back on again. Hubby looks at me when I say I need to escape and I think he thinks I don't care about him or the kids and really he could not be further from the truth, it's because I don't want to be grumpy at them that I need to get out.
The joy of getting kids to look at the camera and smile, without sticking their tongues out! |
I am sure I am not alone in my need to recharge. Being a Mum is the hardest job I have ever taken on. It's also the most rewarding one, so it's always worth giving everything I have to make it amazing for me and the kids. So next time hubby looks at my like I have a screw loose I hope he realises I am not loosing it, just rebooting!
