NATIONAL VODKA DAY: THE THANKSGIVING HELPER

“The Water of Life”

The versatile, once virtually tasteless and odorless tipple accounts for almost 20 to 25 per cent of spirits sold today in North America, making it our most popular libation, a feat that occurred in the 1970s when it outpaced bourbon as America’s favorite spirit. We raise our glass on October 4 to toast National Vodka Day!

Why Celebrate October 4th?

While October 4th seems well documented as National Vodka Day, nobody seems to know the origins of why, but any excuse for a cocktail works for me.

Now you may know that gin is my usual tipple of choice but as a great base for cocktails, vodka is hard to beat.  Pure, clean and just waiting for a bold flavour to partner with, I always have a bottle of vodka on hand.  Lucky for me I was sent not one but two lovely specimens of vodka to help celebrate National Vodka Day!

Chase Original Potato Vodka
Created entirely from field to bottle on our Herefordshire family farm, this truly British vodka has exquisite quality and real provenance, with 250 glorious Herefordshire potatoes in every bottle.
Batch produced in our copper pot still, Fat Betty, for the purest finish, creating a smooth and creamy vodka. Perfect for the ultimate vodka martini.
Awarded best tasting vodka at the San Francisco world spirits competition.

RÅVO
From the Swedish words for raw (rå) and Vodka, is simplicity in a bottle. To us, raw means pure and uncomplicated. A Vodka in its purest form, made from winter wheat, continuously distilled five times, and blended with natural spring water. Råvo is honoring the true, classic, and basic Swedish traditions of how to make a great tasting vodka.

RANDOM VODKA FACTS TO IMPRESS YOUR FRIENDS WITH:
THE TIME WHEN RUSSIA RAN OUT OF VODKA
May 9, 1945 was the infamous day the Nazi surrendered to the Soviet Union. They partied so hard and within 22 hours, they faced a new crisis…they ran out of vodka.

VODKA MEANS WATER
The origin of “vodka” comes from the Russian word “voda”, which means water.
THE MOST EXPENSIVE BOTTLE OF VODKA IS $3.75 MILLION DOLLARS
Meet Billionaire Vodka: triple distilled and filtered through ice, Nordic birch charcoal and sand from crushed gems. The bottle is adorned by diamonds and solid gold labels. When purchased, it is delivered by a secure courier in white gloves. Fancy.

VODKA IS LIGHTER THAN WATER
1 liter of water equates to 1,000 grams, compared to 1 liter of vodka at 950 grams.

DURING WORLD WAR I, RUSSIA BANNED THE SALE OF VODKA!
As a result, the Russian government lost a third of its income in no time.

In true Life Without Lemons style I, of course, want to share some vodka cocktail love with you on this very special day and with Thanksgiving just around the corner it seems only right that I share a little something that will make peeling all those potatoes seem like a two second job!  The syrup below is a delight and would also be fabulous in sparking water for the designated drivers out there or drizzled on ice cream or pancakes.
Sweet, sour and fall scented without a hint of damn pumpkin spice anywhere!

GINGER CRANBERRY SYRUP
WHAT YOU NEED
200 g golden sugar
200 ml water
5 cm piece of ginger peeled and roughly chopped
100 g cranberries (frozen ones would work too)
1 x cinnamon stick
pinch salt

WHAT YOU DO
Place everything in a pan, bring to a gentle boil and simmer for 5 minutes.  Allow to cool, strain and store in a sealed jar in the fridge.

THE THANKSGIVING HELPER

WHAT YOU NEED
Vodka
Ginger Cranberry Syrup
Sparking Water

WHAT YOU DO
Place the vodka in a glass (amount dependent on how many vegetables you need to peel), add about 1 tsp syrup, some ice and a splash of sparking water.  Mix, taste and add more syrup (or vodka) to taste.

Remember to peel vegetables and drink responsibly.  From all of us here in the Life Without Lemons house a big vodka cheers to you all this National Vodka Day (No dogs were given vodka to create this post)

Disclaimer: I was sent some vodka.  I didn't get paid, just got vodka.  I know, cool right?  I created the cocktail recipe for this post and all of the photo's, fallen leaves and dogs are my own.  I even grew those pumpkins in my garden.  Yeah!
