"WHEAT - one of life's simple ingredients"
Grown right here at home and shared around the world, wheat is an essential, versatile ingredient in all our lives. Nourish your family for health and well-being by including whole-grain wheat as part of your diet.
~Lifes Simple Ingredient
Whole grain means all three parts of the grain are used, including the fibre-rich outer layer and the nutrient-packed germ.Don't worry if you didn't know what a whole grain is, a recent UK study showed us this;
70% of people are not aware of whole grain health benefits
54% of people do not know what whole grains are
77% of those surveys do not check what ingredients are in foods
72% said would eat more whole grain if knew health benefits
And only 15% said that eat three servings of whole grain a day - the recommended amount!
Why should you and your family be eating whole grains?
It was previously thought that whole grains reduced the risk of disease because they are a good source of fibre. But latest research confirms that those little whole grains are a power house of good stuff, including vitamins, minerals and complex carbohydrates that protects the body against many diseases; pretty cool, right? The University of Minnesota, who has published several studies on health benefits of whole grain, said research showed those who ate whole grain products every day had about a 15 to 25% reduction in death from heart disease and cancer. So really what are you waiting for?
So I am teaming up with the Alberta Wheat Commission to help spread the good wheat word!
I wanted to create a perfect summer appetizer for sharing with fiends and family as you sit on your deck and sip a nice glass of wine! These amazingly simple flatbreads can be cooked in a non stick pan, over a campfire or straight on the BBQ. You can adjust the toppings to suit how you feel or even serve plain with grilled meats & vegetables.
WHOLEWHEAT FLATBREADS
WHAT YOU NEED
200g Wholewheat Flour
80g All purpose flour
5g fast action yeast
1 tsp sea salt
1 tablespoon melted butter
130g warm water
Olive oil for brushing and drizzling.
1. Place the flours, yeast and salt in a bowl. Mix and make a well in the centre.
2. Pour the melted butter into the well and start adding the water a little at a time and mixing until the dough comes together. You might not need all of the water.
3. Tip the dough onto a floured surface and knead for bout 5 minutes until the dough is soft and smooth.
4. Cover the dough with a clean cloth and leave to rise in a warm place for about an hour. It should be double in size after this rise.
5. Cut the dough into 8 even pieces and roll out into thin circles. Prick the dough a few times with a fork to stop it bubbling up and rising too much when you cook them.
6. Brush the flatbreads with a little oil on both sides and fry in a hot frying pan or straight onto the grills of a hot BBQ. Cook till golden and each side and wrap in a towel to keep warm whilst you cook the others.
7. Serve with a drizzle of olive oil and add any of these these delicious toppings;
- Fresh red chilli, parsley & Malden Sea Salt
- Lemon zest, fresh basil & Malden Sea Salt
- Fennel Seeds & Black pepper
- Dried chilli flakes and cilantro
Cut into small triangles and serve with drinks. Perfect party food.

Thank you for sharing the recipe. I'm on 70% don't know much about whole grains although I follow many food bloggers. Can't wait to try this flatbreads recipe.
