Giving Thanks

Thanksgiving-  I am confused?  The UK does not acknowledge Thanksgiving in any way and now I live in Canada it is thrust upon me and I am a little lost?  From my limited Googling I can see that we are giving thanks for what we have, our family, our food and generally everything good around us.

This all sounds good to me as I believe we should be thankful for the good in our lives because we all work hard to make our lives good and why not have an entire holiday that celebrates it.  I have to admit what I find most appealing is that this holiday seems to be focused on food.  Now regardless of my limited background of Thanksgiving, I like food.  I am quite good at food and I can cook a mean turkey, so perhaps Thanksgiving is my perfect celebration?

In my Internet searching I have discovered some rather palate scary dishes including sweet potatoes with added sweetness in either maple syrup or marshmallow form.  I believe that sweet potatoes are sweet enough (the name is a slight give away!), without the addition of jaw aching additives.  Perhaps I am missing the point of these recipes?  Sweet is an indulgence of comfort, it brings us back to childhood where life is simple and pleasures are basic.

I am a Thanksgiving virgin and will embrace what I think is the point of this celebration.  I will be thankful for my family and friends.  I will celebrate what I have by indulging in good food.  I hope that I have got it right?  These are the things that make me happy and make my life complete so I cannot think of anything else I could wish to be thankful for.

So here is to Turkey, Pumpkin Pie and everything that makes your life sing.  Happy Thanksgiving.
